Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the major global health challenges of the 21st century. Owing to their diversified metabolic characteristics and functions, various metals such as zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), and magnesium (Mg) are considered to be essential for human health. Deficiency of some essential trace elements may lead to the development of DM. The present study aimed to evaluate the contents of Zn, Cu, Cr, Mn, and Mg in the scalp hair samples of patients with type 2 DM from Jeddah (Saudi Arabia). The hair samples were collected from 55 patients with DM aged 45–65 years. Also, 55 age-matched nondiabetic healthy subjects were selected from the same city for a comparative analysis. Zn, Cr, Mn, and Mg levels in hair were found to be significantly lower (P < 0.05) in the group of patients with type 2 DM than in nondiabetic subjects. However, the Cu level in hair was significantly higher (P < 0.05) in patients with type 2 DM than in nondiabetic subjects. The results revealed that hair Cu concentrations in patients with DM were positively related to body mass index (BMI), whereas Zn, Cr, Mn, and Mg concentrations were inversely related to BMI. Finally, the concentrations of these trace elements in the scalp hair and serum samples of patients with DM were compared.

3.An Estimation of the Association of Postpartum Depression with Mizaj (Temperament) in Postnatal Women: A Cross-sectional Study

doi: 10.5505/ias.2016.97830  Pages 10 - 13
Postpartum depression (PPD) is a major public health problem similar to the depression at other times. It is frequently seen in postnatal women of all cultures including the developed (10%–15%) and the developing countries (11%–48%). The Unani and modern fiction mutually proposes the role of pregnancy and childbirth in the development of this psychiatric disorder. Moreover, the former system also suggests the role of mizaj (temperament) in the development of this disarray.
To study the association of PPD with the mizaj (temperament) of postnatal women at their 6 weeks of delivery in a tertiary hospital of New Delhi.
A total of 231 postnatal women were interviewed using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) at their 6 weeks of delivery. The mizaj (temperament) of each participant was measured with the assistance of Ajnas-e-Ashra.
Twenty-eight out of 231 postnatal women scored 10 on the EPDS. PPD was seen in women of all 4 temperaments, but on comparing the 2 groups (depressed and nondepressed) on the basis of mizaj of women, no statistically significant association was seen (P value > 0.05). Therefore, the result suggested no significant association of PPD with the temperament of postnatal women.
PPD is the common mental disarray that can be seen in women of all temperaments. Thus, screening of PPD should be taken into account among all women as the routine practice so that the hazards of PPD can be prevented.

This study aimed to determine the cause of Yabis attribution in the heart by estimating the ash value of three vital organs, such as heart, brain, and liver, of three species, chicken, goat, and buffalo. Creatures are composed of Arkan Arba'a in varied proportions, qualitatively and quantitatively most suitable for accomplishing their functions. Philosophers have described the structural and functional variabilities of species in terms of the Mizaj, which relates to its possible dominant Rukn. The Mizaj of human beings is described as the reflection of the Mizaj of their heart and the organs connected to it. The Mizaj of heart is attributed as Harr-Yabis.
Twenty-seven samples of vital organs of three species, each obtained from market, were subjected to total ash value determination. The procedure was followed in accordance with the International Standard, ISO 936: 1998(E).
The mean ash value of the chicken's heart, brain, and liver was 5.18%, 7.62%, and 6.56%, respectively. The mean ash value of the goat's heart, brain, and liver was 2.53%, 11.18% and 4.24%, respectively. The mean ash value in the buffalo's heart, brain, and liver was 5.32%, 8.74%, and 6.56%, respectively.
Interpretation and Conclusion: Yubusat is required for hardness, stiffness, and durability to stay active and dynamic. Compared with the brain and liver, the heart's rigid nature, consistent action, and resemblance with the coniferous shape of Rukn Nar indicates the presence of Yubusat Nariyya. In this study, the least mean total ash value of the heart among all the three species implies the least presence of Ajza’ Ardiyya, thus validating the presence of Yubusat Nariyya in it. Therefore, the heart's structure and function are in accordance with its Hararat and Yubusat Nariyya.

Alendronate is the most popular bisphosphonate used to prevent osteoporotic fragility fractures in postmenopausal women. However, an increasing number of reports show a possible association between long-term treatment with biphosphanates and the occurrence of characteristic femoral fragility fractures. This study reported a case of a bilateral femoral insufficiency fracture in a woman receiving long-term alendronate therapy. The woman suffered from bilateral femoral pain while having physical therapy in the hospital and sustained a right displaced and left nondisplaced femoral shaft fracture. The characteristics and natural course of this bilateral fracture was analyzed and the importance of being aware of the possible correlation between long-term alendronate therapy and insufficiency femoral fractures was emphasized.

Lipomas are benign soft tissue tumors. They can rarely be mesenterically located and symptomatic. It is very important to conduct the differential diagnosis of large intra-abdominal mass lesions. Radiological imaging techniques are often used for diagnosis, but when these techniques are not sufficient or when it becomes obligatory to cure symptoms of the lesion, surgical excision should be performedThis study aimed to present a patient with complaints and symptoms of an intraabdominal giant mass lesion, the pathological diagnosis of which the revealed a giant mesenteric lipoma.

Lateral epicondylitis (LE), is one of the most common diseases of the arm with repetitive microtrauma by overuse of the wrist. Several conventional therapies are offered for tennis elbow. When classical conservative treatments are unsuccessful or have side effects, patients opt for complementary medicine, particularly needle acupuncture. A 26-year-old male right-handed amateur volleyball player presented with severe pain radiating from the lateral aspect of the right elbow. Pain was initiated by resisted wrist extension with the elbow in full extension and the forearm in pronation. His pain was unresponsive to NSAID, local corticosteroid injection, and 21 times rehabilitation. The body points were selected according to the pulse test in Chinese medicine, and the ear points were determined by detecting the Nogiers’ ear acupuncture points. The energy level of the patient was measured using the pulse oscillography. Blocking was observed in all three energy circles on the pulse oscillography. At the end of the therapy, the average grip strength of the affected hand increased and VAS had decreased by the end of the treatment. The pulse oscillography indicated that the blocking and energy imbalance in the three circles were completely dissolved.
In conclusion, acupuncture is an effective therapy for LE, and pulse oscillography is an important device for the diagnosis and therapy.
